General Information on Studying Abroad

Spending a semester or a year abroad opens up entirely new perspectives – both for your studies and your personal development.

In addition to broadening your academic horizons, studying abroad enables you to improve your language skills and build an international network. Experience abroad is also a welcome and highly desirable qualification in today’s competitive labour market.

Thorough planning is essential for studying abroad. We recommend that you begin preparations approximately 12 to 18 months before your intended departure. Your first step should be to visit the International Office (one of their initial consultations= or consulting the Departmental Exchange Coordinator during their office hours.

Generally speaking, there are two ways to go abroad as part of your degree programme:

  • Participating in an exchange programme, such as ERASMUS+ in Europe (for studies or internships), or taking advantage of the University of Greifswald’s partnerships with other universities worldwide (for studies).
  • Applying independently to a university abroad or organising an internship abroad at your own accord.

ERASMUS+ is the most popular exchange programme, offering several benefits that include tuition fee waivers, guaranteed recognition of academic achievements through Learning Agreements, and many more.

The International Office can provide advice on exchange programmes, scholarships, and other funding opportunities offered by foundations or organisations.
